"Head and shoulders above gastro-pub mediocrity, The Camden Arms is a stylish jaunt into quirky pub dining. The beautiful, regally designed interior is currently the latest hangout for the lucky residents of Camden and surrounds, in an area not necessarily known for its culinary greatness. But the Camden Arms manages a relaxed "pub grub" attitude with a sniff of restaurant elegance.
Fortunately, the people behind The Camden Arms have employed the seriously underestimated technique of less is more; the menu boast mostly simple, British inspired dishes; generous in their portions and simple in execution.
The pork and ale sausages with apple mash, dwarf beans and plenty of red wine gravy had all the hallmarks of a homemade, crumbly sausage, the tender boozy steak pie with honey roasted parsnips lived up to it's name in booziness, and could have been enough for two in generosity. Choosing by elimination wasn't possible here; from the range of salad starters to beef burger the menu offers more than just a handful of attractively worded and priced dishes.
Like all good pubs, The Camden Arms also boasts a ghost, the premises being famous for being the scene of the last fatal duel in Britain, fought in 1843 between Lieutenant Munro and his brother-in-law Lieutenant-Colonel Fawcett (the said ghost.) A beautiful granite bar dominates the dining room, with plenty of bar stools, dining tables and a chaise lounge for maximum lounging.
The addition of a great cocktail list also adds sophistication of this venue, alongside a selection of carefully chosen tap and bottled beers. It's rare that gastro-pubs around manage to strike a balance between great food, drinks, atmosphere and service without inflated prices; here's hoping The Camden Arms is leading the way for a new movement into "pub sophistication.""
