Rachel all smiles despite criticism - Sept 5, 2020
Actress Rachel Weisz was all smiles at the world premiere of her new film The Fountain. The Oscar-winning star went for full-on glamour in a black Versace gown with red sash. She put on a brave face despite the film earlier being booed by critics at the Venice Film Festival.
It is written and directed by her American fiance, Darren Aronofsky. The actress gave birth to the couple’s first child, Henry Chance, in May. Audiences were left perplexed by the film, which features three parallel stories spanning 1,000 years.
X-Men actor Hugh Jackman stars as a 16th century Spanish explorer, 21st century scientist and 26th century astronaut, searching for the Fountain of Youth in a bid to save the life of Rachel’s character, the woman he loves. In the contemporary story, she is dying of cancer and her scientist husband races against time to find a cure.
The £18 million film was rejected by all the major studios - and an earlier incarnation set to star Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett was ditched - until it was finally picked up. 35-year-old Rachel said she had every faith in the movie. "I think it’s wonderful that the film is so different. I would love to work with Darren again," she said.
Rachel premieres in Venice - Sept 4, 2020
British actress Rachel Weisz will be in Venice today for the world premiere of her new film The Fountain. It will be her first major public appearance since the birth of baby Henry Chance in May. (see images of the Venice Film Festival 2006)
The Fountain is written and directed by the actress’ American fiance, Darren Aronofsky, and 35-year-old Rachel stars opposite X-Men actor Hugh Jackman. Spanning 1,000 years, it is billed as an epic tale of love, death and spirituality. The story takes Hugh from 16th century Spain to the year 2500AD in a quest for the Fountain of Youth to save the woman he loves.
Rachel’s last film, an adaptation of John Le Carre’s The Constant Gardener, earned her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Venice will also see a screening of the US remake of cult horror The Wicker Man, starring Nicolas Cage in the role made famous by Edward Woodward. Released in the UK last Friday, the film has been derided by critics who say it is not a patch on the 1973 British original.
Rachel Weisz has become a mummy - June 2, 2020
’The Mummy’ star Rachel Weisz has become a mummy. The British actress - who won an Oscar earlier this year (06) for her supporting role in ’The Constant Gardener’ - gave birth to her son in New York.
The boy is the first child for Weisz and her fiance, ’Requiem For A Dream’ director Darren Aronofsky. Despite becoming a mum in the same year as winning an Academy Award, Weisz ruled out naming her first born after the gong. At the ceremony in March, she said: "We’ve narrowed it down to a few choices but Oscar isn’t among them."
In January, the 35-year-old actress - who started her career at the ADC Theatre in Cambridge, while studying at university in the city - revealed she was expecting after finding her ideal man. She told ’The Tonight Show’ host Jay Leno: "I found myself a sophisticated, educated American. He’s not an actor. "He’s travelled the world. He knows where Europe is, unlike a lot of Americans. He’s very cultured, but he’s all man."
