Kielty’s TV quip sparks complaints - Mar 13 2007
Comic Relief Does Fame Academy host Patrick Kielty has sparked complaints after calling a contestant a "big gayer".
Kielty directed his comment at Radio 1 DJ Colin Murray after he became teary-eyed as he performed on Saturday night.
Three viewers have complained to media watchdog Ofcom and the BBC said it had received a "small number".
The BBC One show was broadcast live.
"We received a small number of complaints following Patrick’s comment on the show on Saturday night.
"Patrick’s comment was spur of the moment, unscripted and not intended to cause offence.
"However, we have reminded Patrick to be more careful during the remaining live shows," a BBC spokeswoman told Mediaguardian.
It echoes the row sparked last year when Radio 1 breakfast DJ Chris Moyles used the word "gay".
The BBC governors’ complaints committee cleared Moyles of any offence, saying young people commonly use the term to mean "lame" or "rubbish".

However, Patrick used this tragedy to the advantage of his career later in life. As a student at Queen's University he became a popular regular on the local stand up scene. His gigs at The Empire pub often saw him don a balaclava and make comedy paramilitary speeches.
This was just the beginning of a career in the spotlight and in 1993 Patrick was offered a presenting gig on UTV's SUS. Soon after he became the warm up man for BBC Northern Ireland's popular Anderson on the Box, proving so popular that when the show was axed it was replaced with Patrick's own PK Tonight.
Noticed by London Producers Patrick was shipped to Britain after a year of PK Tonight, and he was given Last Chance Lottery and Patrick Kielty Almost Live, which have led to Patrick becoming one of British TV's most watched presenters working on Love Island and Fame Academy most notably.
The presenter has also returned to stand up, touring the UK in 2006.
Patrick has previously been linked to Irish presenter Amanda Byram. He jokes that their relationship received cross border funding.
