Do you think that the programme could help you overcome your phobias?
"I was going to go and see someone about my heights phobia as I get really frightened and can’t cope. I just wanted to get over that, as it’s really annoying. It might help to desensitise me towards that phobia. I think going to a place like that with six people you don’t know and having to do challenges like that, I don’t mean to sound naff, but I think there must be some mentally strengthening side to it all and that it will change you a little bit. I’m quite excited, but I don’t know how, that it might do that!"
On the scale of 1 to 10 how tough are you (with 10 being the toughest)?
"God! Do you know what? I am nowhere near a ten in anything! I would have thought maybe that I was average. About six. I would say physically I would be about a seven and mentally about a six."
What do you think has been the bravest thing you have done?
"Bunging jumping with a kilt on! I was very scared! I was spread like an eagle in the air with my kilt around my neck!" (Now the question we all want to know is - were you a true Scotsman?) No I wasn’t! I did have pants on which would have made quite an interesting photo.! It did anyway but that was probably the maddest thing I have done. It was on a very, very cold day in the Highlands. (Lucky he did have pants on then!!) It was all right though but I thought that I would never do another one. I have got a funny feeling that there might be something like that in Buenos Aires. We should find out when we go there though as we overlap with another group who are doing it so they will probably be telling us what we have to do! They definitely say there will be one endurance challenge - that could involve something like running, then they say there will be a nasty edible one - that will probably be rank and like I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! That doesn’t amuse me at all! I have heard about things like bull’s testicles! Really stupid, mad things that will make you vomit. Oh God!"
If you saw a cat stuck in a tree would you climb up and rescue it?
"I would probably leave it as I’m allergic to them! I would have to send a fireman after it! (Laughs) I would have to get someone else to get it as I really do get a bad allergy. I don’t get on with cats but I love dogs. I would pass the buck!"
What about if a building were on fire and a baby inside - what would you do then?
"Oh God! I would do something. It’s horrible when a baby is crying anyway as it makes you feel quite uncomfortable. God, yeah, there is no doubt that I would try and do something."
Who are your nominated charity and why did you decide it was to be them whom you raise the money for? "The charity is Childline. In 1933 I hosted a concert in aid of that charity which included Take That and there were 15,000 people there and we made something like £150,000 for them. I got to know about the great work that they do with kids and they are just fantastic. They always need more money for more phone lines."
What are your top three survival tactics?
"1. Statistically put the other team off. 2. Pull together as a team. 3. Incite hatred in the other team. I think there will be a lot of mind games going on."
If you were limited to three items you take with you what would they be?
"Definitely one of those chargers which you can plug your mobile phone in. Oh God! Probably my I-Pod I would have thought for tunes. (What about the mobile phone for your charger?!) Of course! Definitely."
