Naomi facing civil case - Jan 18 2007
Lawyers for the maid who claims Naomi Campbell threw a mobile phone at her when she could not find a favourite pair of jeans today said they have launched a civil case against the supermodel.
The 36-year-old supermodel pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a misdemeanour charge of reckless assault in a criminal court over the incident, admitting she threw the phone, but insisting she never intended for it to hit Anna Scolavino.
She was ordered to do five days’ community service, attend anger management classes and pay medical bills of 363 dollars (£184) for Ms Scolavino after agreeing a plea bargain with prosecutors that saw a more serious assault charge dropped.
The housekeeper, who police said needed four stitches to her head, is now suing her for unspecified damages, alleging assault, battery, libel and slander.
In the lawsuit, filed in Brooklyn Supreme Court, the maid, 43, claims she told the Streatham-born model she could not continue working for her and would leave the Park Avenue apartment after the jeans incident.
"As the plaintiff was descending an interior stairway within the apartment in an effort to leave the premises, she was placed in imminent apprehension of physical harm and was then intentionally struck in the head with a cell (mobile) phone by the defendant," the suit alleges.
Naomi’s lawyer David Breitbart said he had no comment on the civil suit, which he had been expecting.
Naomi admits attacking maid - Jan 16 2007
Supermodel Naomi Campbell pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour charge of reckless assault.
Following a plea bargain with prosecutors at Manhattan Criminal Court, New York, she was sentenced to five days’ community service and a two-day anger management course, and ordered to pay medical bills of 363.33 dollars for her injured housekeeper, who was hurt when Naomi threw a mobile phone.
In court, the beautiful model admitted throwing the phone in her Park Avenue apartment but said she did not intend for it to hit maid Ana Scolavino, who needed four stitches after the incident.
She said: "I am advised that Ana was hurt, and I am deeply sorry about that."
Sporting a short bobbed haircut with a fringe, and wearing a pencil skirt, 4in heels and a voluminous Louis Vuitton jacket, Naomi told the judge: "I have an apartment at 500 Park Avenue.
"Ana Scolavino was an employee of mine.
"During the morning of March 30, 2006, I threw a cellphone in the apartment.
"The cellphone hit Ana.
"That was an accident because I did not intend to hit her."
The British model’s lawyer, David Breitbart, asked that her community service be an indoor task rather than something like sweeping the streets. This was for her safety, he explained.
Judge Robert Mandelbaum said he would note the request.
Assistant District Attorney Shanda Strain said: "If that’s what is available at the time she goes to do the community service that is acceptable."

She was raised by her grandparents since her mother, the ambitious Valerie, was making her way around the world with an exotic dance troupe. At 13, precocious Naomi started at the Italia Conti stage school. Two years later she was ’discovered’ in Covent Garden by a modelling scout.
Recently, she has been seeking anger therapy - her American agency fired her on the grounds that she was ’unbearable’ and published the following statement: ’No amount of money or prestige could further justify the abuse she has imposed on our staff and clients.’ She recently pleaded guilty to assaulting her assistant with the mobile phone she normally keeps clamped to her ear. Naomi had a top 10 hit with Babywoman in Japan and has a reputation for being always late.
She has been romanced by a string of men including Mike Tyson, Robert De Niro, Joaquin Cortes and was rumoured to have had a fling with Joseph Fiennes. She is currently dating Italian millionaire Flavio Briatore.
As well as modelling and a stab at a music career she has also penned a novel entitled Swan (1995) and has appeared in the film Pret-a-Porter, she also appeared in an episode of Absolutely Fabulous and once was a pupil in Grange Hill. Naomi has also just launched her own perfume. She also has an apartment in Chelsea. (written 2001)
