Jude and Keira glitter at awards - Nov 19 2007
Jude Law and Keira Knightley have been crowned king and queen of the big screen, being named Film Actor and Film Actress of the Year at the Variety Club Showbiz Awards.

Keira won plaudits for her role in Atonement this year, while Jude receives the gong despite only lukewarm reviews for the film Sleuth, which is about to be released.

Other winners include Philip Glenister for TV Performance of the Year for Life On Mars and Michael Parkinson for Outstanding Contribution to Showbusiness.

The awards are all voted for by the Variety board, with the exception of Strictly Come Dancing which beat Life On Mars, X Factor and Any Dream Will Do to take best TV show - voted for by Daily Express readers.

Lee Mead, the winner of the BBC talent search Any Dream Will Do, took the award for Outstanding New Talent for his debut in Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Lee Evans won the award for Comedy, and Westlife best Recording Artist.

Welsh star Katherine Jenkins was named Classical Performer of the Year at the bash at the London Hilton.

David Suchet won Stage Performance of the Year for his performance in The Last Confession, while Cabaret was named best Musical Theatre, and Jerry Springer won the International award for his show on Sky One.

The awards show will be broadcast on Sky Three on November 24 and Sky One on November 25.

Keira ’not comfortable’ being snapped - Sept 20007
She may be one of the most photographed women in Britain, but Keira Knightley has apparently confessed she feels uncomfortable in front of the cameras.

The actress - who’s currently starring in new film Atonement - admits she worries about how she looks and sometimes feels awkward in front of snappers.

"I look in the mirror and go, ’Oh no! More spots, more acne’. And I’m not comfortable being photographed when I’m being myself," Keira reportedly told the Daily Mirror.

"I believe that the Aborigines say that every photo takes away a bit of your soul. It’s very odd, but I think there’s some truth in that."

Keira, who jetted to Canada for the Toronto Film Festival last week, recently revealed that despite being an A-list star she likes to stay in touch with the world outside of the limelight.

"I do like to keep in touch with thing that are happening - reading newspapers, things like that," she said.

Hollywood is extraordinary, says Keira - Sept 12 2007
Keira Knightley apparently thinks that Hollywood sizes are "extraordinary" - and has revealed that she’s twice the size of most of the actresses there.

The 22-year-old - whose latest role is in Atonement, alongside James McAvoy - told Hello! magazine: "I’m twice the size - height and everything else - of most of the other girls who are going to see the director for a part.

"When you realise that I’m - at my size - one of the largest actresses there you just think, ’This is getting ridiculous!’. It’s quite extraordinary, and it’s at that point that you start to think, ’I don’t think it would be healthy for me to stay here much longer...’"

She insists she manages to stay in touch with normality.

"This is the real world for me - making movies, acting," she explained. "But I do like to keep in touch with thing that are happening - reading newspapers, things like that.

"Am I a workaholic? I guess I am. And yes, I do want to spend more time with my friends and family."

Biography

Daughter to actors Will Knightley and Sharman MacDonald, Keira was first in a film at the age of 11, in A Village Affair (’94). In ’99 Hollywood knocked on her door with a role in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace as Padme’s double.

She starred in The Princess of Thieves in ’01, and then in Bend It Like Beckham in ’02, where she played the role of a football-obsessed teenager alongside the lead actress Parminder Nagra. Because she had barely touched a football until then, Keira trained intensely for three full months, practicing tricks and ball handling, Brazilian style. As Bend It Like Beckham gained in popularity, so did Keira, making a name for herself.

It was not long before Jerry Bruckheimer, the famous Hollywood producer of blockbusters like Pearl Harbor, chose her for a leading role in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (’03), starring alongside Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. The Pirates of the Caribbean went on to become a huge international box-office hit, bringing Keira’s fame to an international level.

Her latest appearance is as Guinevere in the new Disney adaptation of King Arthur’s tales. Hollywood seems to have taken a liking to her. As have Glamour magazine’s ’fashion analysts,’ who listed her as the fifth best-dressed female celebrity world-wide (Kate Moss came in number one, but she’s got about a decade of experience under the belt, if nothing else).
