"I’ve been drinking beer since I was 13. I’m English! Sometimes I smoke, sometimes I drink. But I don’t go on binges," she said. "I’m not a genuine bad girl. I don’t want to ruin my voice.
"But when I’m home in England, I have a beer and a smoke. Sometimes I even smoke weed."
The Devon schoolgirl-turned-diva has been criticised at home for her unusual accent and for turning up late to a recent gig.
But the singer is a smash hit in the States and her third album, Introducing Joss Stone, entered the US Billboard chart at No 2.
The news that Joss has been drinking since she was 13 may not such a surprise considering the early start of her career.
She appeared on Star For A Night on BBC TV singing You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman at the age of 14 and got a record deal a year later.
Her debut album, The Soul Sessions, was released when she was just 16.
Joss finds love? - April 4 2007
Joss Stone has apparently found true love - with a man who is more than twice her age.
The songstress has fallen for music producer Raphael Saadiq - who at 40 is 21 years her senior.
According to the Daily Mirror, even though her spokespeople have denied she is in a relationship, Joss’s pal Lemar let the cat out of the bag at the launch of Smooth FM yesterday.
He told the paper: "I’ve known about the relationship for ages. Joss is always texting me about how happy she is. And it’s the real deal."
Joss met Raphael when he played bass on her last album, Introducing Joss Stone, and she has previously tried to hide their relationship.
She recently said: "He is from Oakland, I’m from Devon, England; he is 40, I am 19; he is American, I’m English. It’s, like, two completely different people."
Lemar added: "I’m really happy for her. She’s great girl and she’s really into him.
"She’s doing really well in the States right now so it’s nice that she’s settling down too."
Stone enjoys US album chart success - Mar 29 2008
Joss Stone’s third album has entered the US Billboard chart at number two.
Introducing Joss Stone becomes the highest-placed new entry by a British female artist for 20 years.
The placing is good news for the 19-year-old after she was lambasted for her mid-American twang at the Brits and for turning up late at a recent gig.
Chart archivists are currently researching whether Introducing Joss Stone smashes the record for the highest album chart new entry ever on the Billboard album chart by a British female.
But so far, they have only been able to research back over the last 20 years.
The Brit Award winner’s album placing beat new entries from the likes of Dido, Annie Lennox and the Spice Girls.
The singer’s previous two albums Soul Sessions and Mind Body and Soul peaked at 38 and 11 respectively.
Both went on to sell one million copies each in the US with combined worldwide sales of over seven million.
Stone appeared on Star For A Night on BBC TV singing You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman at the age of 14 and got a record deal a year later.
Her debut album, The Soul Sessions, was released when she was just 16.

Rebranded as young soul diva Joss Stone the sixteen year old burst on to the scene with a reworking of The White Stripes’ Fell In Love With A Girl, earning her critical acclaim from the notoriously hard to please music press and ensuring that her debut album The Soul Sessions went top five here in the UK.
Joss’ record company wasted no time in following up her success with a hastily released second album, Mind, Body and Soul in 2004. Made up entirely of original songs the album debuted at number one in the charts, making Joss the youngest artist to reach the spot, and spawned several popular singles including You Had Me and Don’t Cha Wanna Ride?
In 2005 the singer was presented with two Brit Awards, nominated for three Grammy Awards and appeared at massive charity concert Live8 in Hyde Park…not bad going for an eighteen year old from Devon.
