Friends of the singer say that he broke the news to the stunning supermodel last month after deciding that their careers meant they didn’t spend enough time together, reports the Sun.

The 27-year-old model is said to be upset about the split, but understands that the relationship could not have gone on.

"James and Petra aren’t going out any more. He told her it wasn’t working out and that it was best to make a clean break," a friend told the paper.

"They are still on close terms as friends and they speak all the time. He and Petra didn’t get to spend enough time together because their careers have kept them on different sides of the globe for much of the time.

James has been spending his time in America working on his the follow-up to his multi-million selling debut, Back To Bedlam.

And far from moping around, the 30-year-old is relishing his new-found singledom and has been partying with Lindsay Lohan although the friend denies any romance.

James Blunt’s rep has blamed "swarming" paparazzi for an accident that resulted in the singer’s car running over a man’s foot.

A police report had revealed the singer had been "involved" in a car accident, but the rep denied reports that James hit a fan as he left a pre-Oscar party in LA on Saturday.

"It wasn’t a fan," the rep told People magazine. "It was a ton of paparazzi that were all swarming his car as he was driving 2mph trying to navigate his way through them. That’s the first and foremost. They were invading his space. He was just trying to quietly leave the party."

Local police were called to the incident, which occurred outside the home of CAA agent Bryan Lourd at 1.58am on Saturday.

Other guests at the annual A-list bash included George Clooney, Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise and Madonna.

Photographer Josephine Santos told the magazine: "Suddenly James Blunt pulled out. I was across the street. I looked over and the guy was flat on his back.

"I was totally frightened. I thought maybe that he got flattened by the car. I thought he was fully run over. It was horrifying.

"It turns out that he started to get up slowly. His right lower leg near his foot was run over."

Although the man was taken to hospital for treatment, the photographer says she spotted him back at work on Sunday.

"I saw him the next day. He was walking around with a limp."

British singer James Blunt plans to move to an exclusive Swiss ski resort, local officials said today.

Patrick Messeiller, director of tourism for Verbier, confirmed a report in the Swiss daily Le Matin that the singer, who is a frequent visitor to the mountain village, had registered with the tax office there.

James, 32, is the latest celebrity to move to the alpine nation, after French rock legend Johnny Hallyday took up residence in nearby Gstaad last month.

Hallyday’s move prompted a heated debate in France about rich people and multinational companies fleeing the country for Switzerland because of low taxation there.
