Hugh Grant

Hugh Grant

  • Profession: Actor
  • Place/Date of Birth: Hammersmith, London, 09 September 2020
  • Associated with: Jemima Khan, Liz Hurley

In a new book aimed at helping friends and families of cancer sufferers, entitled ’What Can I Do To Help?’, the ’Notting Hill’ actor reveals for the first time how he coped with mum Fynvola’s illness and death. Recalling his hospital visits in his mother’s last days, Hugh writes about how he made his beloved mum laugh by wearing her bedpan as a hat and blowing up surgical gloves to resemble udders. He says: "I got a bit bored and went back to tormenting her - my personal favourite being secretly activating her hospital bed so that the head and legs both lifted to put her in an amusing jack-knife position. "The inflated surgical-glove-cum-udder, the cardboard potty as millinery and gulping the patients’ oxygen to alleviate hangovers also passed the hours."

Hugh also jokes that a disastrous attempt to blow-dry his mother’s hair may have "finished her off" - because she tragically died the next day. He said: "I even blow-dried her hair on the day before she died, which was frankly not the success I had hoped for, and which may - I now concede - have finished her off." Hugh was so distraught when Fynvola died that he temporarily put his successful movie career on hold to allow him time to grieve.

President Hugh - May 05
Hugh Grant is starting work on a new film with a political slant. The British actor has signed up for Dreamz, in which he will play a UK TV personality while, over the pond Dennis Quaid will portray the American president. The movie reportedly takes a pop at politics and showbiz and is expected to ruffle a few feathers on its release. We just wonder who Hugh will be taking as his inspiration.Kilroy? Brucey? Les Dennis?

Hugh for PM? - May 05
According to polls the ideal person to get Blair out of power would be Hugh Grant. A pre-election survey carried out by a DVD rental company showed that Hugh, who played the prime minister in Love Actually, would be our number one choice for a new PM. He’s certainly more charismatic than most politicians but what would his policies be? Privileges for English fops? Legalising prostitution? Or, horror of horrors, more Liz Hurley films to be shown on TV?

Hugh’s line is it anyway? - Apr 05
Hugh Grant has upset Sandra Bullock because he just can’t keep his mouth shut. The British actor spoke to waiting press at the Miss Congeniality 2 premiere about Sandra’s relationship with TV mechanic Jesse James - even though the couple have yet to go public. "I haven’t met the mechanic yet, but I’m dying to!" commented Hugh much to his mate’s annoyance, "Hugh has a mental deficiency.he’s going down," she ranted.

Snowy holidays - Apr 05
Hugh Grant and Jemima Goldsmith are so posh. The couple have been snapped taking an ultra fancy skiing break at the exclusive resort Val D’Isere in the French Alps.

Bookies: Hugh won’t marry - Jan 05
Despite rumours to the contrary bookies reckon Hugh Grant won’t marry in 05. Ladbrokes have named Hugh and Simon Cowell as the two stars least likely to get hitched this year, putting long odds on both of them. However, we reckon it could be a good bet - as previously reported Hugh has been seriously talking about getting his new girlfriend, Jemima Goldsmith up the aisle in the near future. We’ll be putting a tenner on it.

Biography

Hugh Grant was born on September 9, 1960. His father James was a carpet salesman, mother Fynvola was a teacher. Hugh was educated in New College, Oxford University where he majored in literature. Although he was first noticed in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Hugh’s movie career took off when he starred in Merchant-Ivory’s Maurice, for which he won the Venice Film Festival’s Best Actor prize.

In 1995, Hugh became the scandal of the year by hiring a prostitute, Divine Brown, to perform certain acts in the privacy of his automobile. His girlfriend, Liz Hurley was not amused and although she stuck by him through the scandal they finally called it quits in 2000 after 13 years together. The Divine Brown incident could well have been the making of Hugh Grant though, after this mishap he was cast in many more films and became a British icon here and in the States.

Although many of his films at this time were dubious to say the least, their ratings were bouyed by his popularity and in 1999 he made a real comeback. Notting Hill was a return to form for Grant, made by the same team that first shot to fame with Four Weddings...it confirmed his status and saw his star on the rise again. Following up his success with About A boy and Bridget Jone’s Diary which saw him departing from his usual role as bumbling English fool and made him a whole new type of heartthrob.

He has also starred in Love Actually as the Prime Minister, which saw much speculation as to whether Brits would actually prefer Grant as the leader of their country. Hugh remains a bachelor, despite rumours of a fling with co-star Sandra Bullock, and remains very close friends with Liz Hurley with whom he owns Simian Productions.
