Hugh to quit? - 13/10/03
Can it be true that we have seen the last of Hugh Grant’s floppy fringe in big blockbuster films?

Hugh Grant has said that the thought of being in another big blockbuster film terrifies him, and he may quit making films. He said ’I think you have to be a particular sort of personality to enjoy trying to open a film at 2,500 cinemas and have the world looking to see how much money it makes at the box office that weekend.’ Isn’t that sort of what being an actor is all about?

He also announced that Simian Films, which he ran with former girlfriend but now best buddy Liz Hurley, was no longer in the film-making business.

Hugh Grant’s middle name is Mungo, but that’s not the only embarrassing thing to emerge out of his background. Hugh admits, "Our family name for hot chocolate is choccy moo moo," (Note: this comes form a man who says, "I beg your parsnips?")

Hugh’s blue tales - 18/02/03
Make sure you tell Hugh Grant when he has to deliver an after dinner speech - as you might end up with rude football jokes instead.

Hugh attended a dinner held by FIFA football officials at a Hampton Court banquet, but only realised that he was expected to make a speech halfway through the proceedings. He apparently retreated to the bathroom to have a think, but said - ’I could only think of three football stories, each one more revolting than the last,’ but alcohol convinced him it would be ok to tell a joke.

But the joke’s punchline ’Show us your hairy bush’ - was met with a stony silence from the 2000-strong audience. Wrong move then Hugh!

Biography

Hugh Grant was born on September 9, 1960. His father James was a carpet salesman, mother Fynvola was a teacher. Hugh was educated in New College, Oxford University where he majored in literature. Although he was first noticed in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Hugh’s movie career took off when he starred in Merchant-Ivory’s Maurice, for which he won the Venice Film Festival’s Best Actor prize.

In 1995, Hugh became the scandal of the year by hiring a prostitute, Divine Brown, to perform certain acts in the privacy of his automobile. His girlfriend, Liz Hurley was not amused and although she stuck by him through the scandal they finally called it quits in 2000 after 13 years together. The Divine Brown incident could well have been the making of Hugh Grant though, after this mishap he was cast in many more films and became a British icon here and in the States.

Although many of his films at this time were dubious to say the least, their ratings were bouyed by his popularity and in 1999 he made a real comeback. Notting Hill was a return to form for Grant, made by the same team that first shot to fame with Four Weddings...it confirmed his status and saw his star on the rise again. Following up his success with About A boy and Bridget Jone’s Diary which saw him departing from his usual role as bumbling English fool and made him a whole new type of heartthrob.

He has also starred in Love Actually as the Prime Minister, which saw much speculation as to whether Brits would actually prefer Grant as the leader of their country. Hugh remains a bachelor, despite rumours of a fling with co-star Sandra Bullock, and remains very close friends with Liz Hurley with whom he owns Simian Productions.
