Graham Norton

  • Profession: Comedian/Presenter
  • Place/Date of Birth: Dublin, Ireland, 04 April 2020

The three-bedroom converted Victorian school house, with a mezzanine master bedroom overlooking the reception area was sold through Foxtons for £465,000. The house held sad memories for comedian Graham, as he used to live there with his ex-partner Scott Michaels. To help him get over these memories Graham has been busy buying up properties elsewhere - he has a £2 million town house in Manhattan, as well as a £200,000 flat in West Cork and a £350,000 holiday home in Cape Town. That should keep him out of mischief...

Graham poised for US fame - 25/09/03
Could it be our Graham is set to leave Britain and relocate to America?

Well, maybe that is a bit too dramatic but the Irish boy has done good by landing his own chat show stateside. It will basically be an American So Graham Norton - and cable channel Comedy Central has secured his services with a whopping multi million pound deal! The deal is for two years, which will give him his own stand-up special as well as presenting a movie show. He already is a cult star over there after BBC America broadcast his last series and it went down a treat. But I don’t think Bow boy Graham will relocate to USA for good - what will I write about!

Generations away - 05/08/03
Graham Norton is apparently considering whether or not to front a revamped, or should that be ’re-camped’ version of The Generation Game.

The Generation Game was first devised by a Dutch housewife, and went on to be hosted by Bruce Forsyth and the late Larry Grayson ’Shut that door’ anybody? Jim Davidson held the helm for a while, but now the BBC want to breathe new life into the show, and have looked across the gulf to Graham Norton on Channel Four. BBC One controller Lorraine Heggessey yesterday confirmed that the show would be returning, although she admitted no host had yet been found. But sources have revealed that Graham could be the one that they want. Graham has said that he is ’very happy with Channel Four’ but the prospects of a prime time BBC1 show must be very tempting.

Norton in trouble - again! - 26/06/03
Hollywood actor Dustin Hoffman has landed Graham Norton in trouble for using a four- letter word during an interview with the Bow based camp host.

Dustin was a guest on the V Graham Norton show and was telling the audience his favourite joke. It included the offending four-letter word in the punchline, one viewer was moved to complain about the bad language and the Broadcasting Standards Commission upheld the complaint. "Given the evidence found by the Commission’s research about the word’s potential for serious offence to viewers, its use in this context crossed acceptable boundaries," the Commission said.

It’s not the first time Norton has been told off by TV watchdogs, earlier this year the BSC upheld complaints over a tasteless gag the comic made about the death of Bee Gee Maurice Gibb.

Happy Birthday dear Graham Norton! - 4/03/03
Although it is not much of a birthday present for the Bow resident to be voted the worst dressed man in Britain - shame on you voters!

Graham Norton is 40 years old tomorrow, which makes him a happy Arian, or does it? He said "I imagined myself working in an office and wearing corduroy trousers by now. I should be depressed about hitting the big 40 but I’m not. I have no problems with it." It is not like he hasn’t achieved anything - Graham is now one of our funniest and hottest presenters on television; he gets paid £1 m a year and owns homes around the world - the most latest property buy in New York. Not bad for a man who is almost forty! (We can just forgive men’s mag GQ for voting him that ridiculous title! Our Graham badly dressed? Never!)

Biography

Graham Norton was born on the 4th of April in Bandon, County Cork in Ireland. His original name is Graham Walker and dad Billy was a Guiness representitive and his mum Rhoda a leading Mother’s Union member. Graham did want to become a journalist but failed to get a place at a journalism school, so he went to University College Cork to study English and French, but then dropped out at the end of his first year to go travelling.

The USA beckoned and Graham joined a hippy commune in San Fansciso. He was even engaged (albeit briefly) to an American lass but broke it off as he recognized for the first time that he was in fact gay. He returned to Ireland to complete his degree, and then moved to London where he joined the Central School of Speech and Drama. Graham Walker then changed to Graham Norton as there was another member of equity with his original name. Norton is in fact his great-grandmothers maiden name.

He had a few acting jobs, but mainly worked as a waiter and a barman until his late 20’s. He was known for being camp and bitchy and this led to ideas of a comedy performance. He wrote the show ’Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s Grand Farewell Tour’ and took it to the Edinburgh fringe festival in 1991. He staged successful one man shows here and made his name internationally when Charlie’s Angels Go To Hell transferred to London. This got him a Perrier Award nomination in 1997. In the same year Channel Five gave him his first television break, when he stood in for chatshow host Jack Docherty.

He proved his worth so much that he got his own series Bring Me The Head of Light Entertainment. After the show started in 1999, Graham’s star continued to rise and he Norton won many awards, including Gay Entertainer of the Year at the 1999 Gaytime TV Awards and two BAFTA’s for Best Entertainment Performance. He also started his own production company which now produces his own shows. The BBC have attempted to lure him away from Channel Four with rumoured offers in the region of £5 million, but so far he has resisted the urge and stays with Channel Four. His weekday show now goes out five nights a week. Graham Norton currently resides in Bow...
