Northern bluefin, which was on the menu at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay and Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s, is in decline due to over fishing, according to the Marine Conservation Society.

A spokeswoman for the Gordon Ramsay Holdings restaurant group said bluefin tuna would be replaced with sustainable yellowfin tuna from June 1.

"There were plans to take bluefin off the menu for a while. It just takes a while because of the number of restaurants in the group," she said.

"Bluefin tuna won’t be used anywhere across the group. It follows advice from Gordon Ramsay Holdings’ suppliers."

Northern bluefin tuna grow slowly but can reach more than 4.5m in length and 680kg in weight, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) said.

The fish has a maximum age of up to 30 years and was traditionally popular in sushi dishes.

MCS fisheries officer Bernadette Clarke welcomed the decision to pull bluefin tuna from Gordon Ramsay restaurants.

"We are delighted that he has finally taken a responsible attitude and removed the species from his menus," she said.

"Other restaurants have already taken the initiative. There is no reason whatsoever for someone like Gordon Ramsay to be continuing to sell this species."

Gordon Ramsay has admitted the protestors who dumped a tonne of horse manure outside his Claridge’s restaurant last week have "got a point".

Demonstrators dressed as horses from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) carried out the smelly stunt in opposition to an episode of the chef’s TV show The F-Word, which explored the possibility of eating horse meat.

It featured journalist Janet Street-Porter offering the meat to racegoers at the Cheltenham Festival, and Gordon said he was taking the flack for her actions.

The 40-year-old joked: "I still smell of that horse s***. Apparently they didn’t like their starters so I would’ve just given them their money back rather than dumping two tonnes of s*** on my front door.

"It was a bit weird and they’ve got a point, I don’t doubt that but all I said was I loved my time in France and I lived above a horse butchers shop, that’s all I said. I wasn’t actually at the racecourse, that was Janet, yet I took the cop for it."

Gordon Ramsay has hit new heights of stardom with news he will be immortalised on the big screen - and who would be better than his old pal Russell Crowe to play him?

The celebrity chef, famed for his foul mouth, has sold the rights to his autobiography Humble Pie which will be made into a film due to be released in 2009, the Telegraph reports.

And although Gordon insisted the cast has "nothing to do with him", he said: "I don’t want it to be anyone well known as I’d like an actor to be discovered on the back of this. It would be a tough part. Russell Crowe is a favourite actor of mine - we get on very well."

Gordon refused to elaborate on the size of the deal made with the film’s producers, saying: "It’s not about the money. It was a conscious decision, although I thought it was a bit of a joke when it first came through.

"They likened it to Billy Elliot. From a potentially talented football player I became a chef against my dad’s wishes," he added.

Biography

By rights Scottish born Gordon Ramsay should have been a professional footballer but injury cost his career with Glasgow Rangers FC. But footballs loss was cookery’s (and shouty sweary reality TV’s) gain.

Following his injury Ramsay signed up for catering college, passing with flying colours and going on to work under legendary chefs Marco Pierre White and Albert Roux. After honing his skills in kitchens around the UK and France, Ramsay went on to become a personal chef for an Australian TV star before flying back to London as part owner of Aubergine. But, in true Ramsay style Gordon had a bust up with the backers of Aubergine, causing him to walk out and take his staff with him to form his eponymous restaurant in Chelsea, the only London eatery to gain three Michelin stars.

He has also opened restaurants in Claridges and the Connaught as well as Petrus in Mayfair, Amaryllis in Glasgow and Verre in Dubai. Ramsay is also a TV celebrity, currently starring in Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares on Channel 4, a reality TV show which gives the Osbournes a run for it’s money in the ******* **** stakes.
