Gail attacks adoption fashion - Oct 26 2007
Gail Porter has hit out at the Hollywood trend for international adoption.

The Scottish TV presenter, who has been visiting Cambodia for a charity project, said that her trip had highlighted the true problems of orphanages in the country.

"I'm kind of anti inter-country adoption," she revealed. "I'm anti these celebrities going out and going 'hmmm,' well you're kind of pretty, and you haven't got any sort of illnesses, so let's have you home," she said.

"So I've been going out to the proper, proper Cambodian orphanages where children are actually suffering, they're still tied to poles and they're naked in a room, and they're locked in."

The 36-year-old, who has written an autobiography called Laid Bare - My Story of Love, Fame and Survival, has particularly looking at the plight of children with illnesses and disabilities, including those with cerebral palsy and Aids.

Angelina Jolie and Madonna have become the figureheads of international adoption, between them taking home children from Malawi, Ethiopia, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Gail’s bald dog - Sept 20 2007
They do say dogs start to look like their owners - it seems Gail Porter has revealed that her dog has started to suffer from alopecia just like her.

The TV presenter took her Shar Pei - called Missy after Missy Elliott - to the vet after she started to develop bald patches and she admits she could hardly believe the vet’s diagnosis.

The 36-year-old told The Sun: " When the vet told me I was like, ’You’re kidding!’"

Now Missy may have to wear a jumper in winter to keep warm.

Mum-of-one Gail lost her hair in 2005 - and thinks it was the result of stress. She has been told the likelihood that her locks will return is fairly slim.

She said recently: "I’ve got to the stage of not really caring any more.

"It was easier than I thought to deal with - I thought it’s just another thing, get on with it, it’s just another part of the journey."

Gail: I understand Owen - Aug 5 2007

Gail Porter has opened up about her suicide attempt, saying she sympathised with Owen Wilson after he apparently tried to take his own life.

The 36-year-old mum, who suffered from bouts of depression and self-harming, took an overdose of painkillers and vodka two years ago, after splitting from Toploader’s Dan Hipgrave.

She told the Daily Mirror: "When I heard about Owen Wilson’s suicide attempt I felt really sad. People can have a public persona of being happy and fun but behind it sometimes they are struggling. I was like that and I think Owen probably is too."

Gail, who later lost her hair when she was struck with alopecia, said she was relieved when her suicide bid failed.

"When I woke up in the hospital after I’d overdosed the first thing I felt was relief. Thank God I’d pulled through. I felt like I’d been given a second chance and it made me stronger. So, when my hair fell out, I knew I’d cope.

"When I think about what could have happened, I realise that nothing is worth that," she added.

Gail’s autobiography Laid Bare: My Story Of Love, Fame And Survival is out on September 6.

No marathon ambition for Gail - May 18 2007
Gail Porter has said she has no plans to take up running - because she doesn’t find pounding the streets competitive enough.

The 36-year-old is currently in training to take part in a charity 10km event pitting Liverpool, London and Glasgow against each other, but says even that added element doesn’t spice things up enough.

Biography

Gail Porter was born in Edinburgh in 1971. After leaving school, she got her first job working at B&Q, where she had to wear a badge saying "Gail. Happy to help!" At the age of 18 she enrolled on an HND at Film School after which she got a job as a runner for a video production company in Edinburgh. "I was treated like a nobody," Gail remembers. "I did everything from making teas and coffees to ordering pizzas and cleaning the railings outside the offices. Once they made me do it with a toothbrush. It was horrible!"

After four years of working behind the scenes she took the plunge and produced her own showreel, interviewing random members of the public on Edinburgh’s Prince Street. This led to her first job in front of the camera as the presenter of a children’s TV show, which in turn landed her the job as presenter of Fully Booked.

She handed in her resignation after doing her famous photo shoot for mens’ magazine GQ, in which she bared all. She has since fronted Electric Circus on Live and Kicking and filled in for Melinda Messenger on Melinda’s Big Night In. She is currently doing The Movie Chart Show on Channel 5. Still, she is best known for having her naked image projected on to the side of the Houses of Parliament about two years ago by adoring fans.

Gail lived in Soho for a while, but now lives in Camden with Toploader husband Dan Hipgrave, and baby Honey. You can nearly always spot them pushing the buggy about on Primrose Hill.
