Others speculated that Britney’s failure to live up to expectations was due to a couple of rather late nights while she was in Vegas, while others reported that she was wobbling on a broken stiletto heel during her performance.
Bleary Britney Flops at VMAs - Sept 10 2007
An out-of-shape, out-of-touch Britney Spears has delivered what was destined to be the most talked about performance of the MTV Video Music Awards -- but for all the wrong reasons.
Kicking off the show with her new single, Gimme More, Britney looked bleary and unprepared, much like her recent tabloid exploits on the streets of Los Angeles.
Even the celebrity-studded audience seemed bewildered. 50 Cent looked at the pop princess with a confused expression; Diddy, her new best friend, was expressionless.
The VMAs was hoping to reinvent itself after suffering poor reviews and a decline in ratings over the last few years.
MTV moved the show to Las Vegas’ Palms Casino, shortened the show from three hours to two, and changed the show’s set-up to focus more on performances than awards.
To that end, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, Kanye West, Fall Out Boy and the Foo Fighters were each hosting four separate suite parties, where much of the show’s performances would be held.
Thankfully, after Britney’s dismal start and a lukewarm intro by comedian Sarah Silverman, the show rebounded. Justin’s suite was packed with revellers, alcohol and eight lingerie-clad stripper types on raised platforms.
Before he accepted the Quadruple Threat of the Year award at his suite, the DJ summoned the partygoers to watch the monitor and go crazy if Justin won.
He did, they did, and Justin said: "I want to challenge MTV to play more videos!" Then he was whisked away by bodyguards and disappeared. He later won Male Artist of the Year.
Britney to Open VMAs - Sept 7 2007
MTV have confirmed the rumours and officially announced that Britney Spears will be opening this weekend’s VMAs to "make a statement", according to the show’s executive producer.
The 25-year-old singer will perform Gimme More - the first single from her forthcoming album - at the event in Las Vegas.
"I wanted to start the show in a very big and dramatic way, and she’s the one to do that," Jesse Ignjatovic told MTV.com. "She’ll captivate everyone, and set the tone for rest of the night."
Britney consulted with illusionist Criss Angel on "some moments of the performance", said Jesse. "You can expect the things we want and expect from Britney - that will all be there. What I’ve see of it is great. She’ll be dancing, performing, dong her thing. That’s exactly what we all want."
Sunday night’s spectacular show will air live from the Palms Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas.
Britney children case dropped - Sep 6 2007
The reported child abuse investigation into Britney Spears has apparently been dropped.
The 25-year-old pop star, who is rumoured to be making her comeback at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas, was being probed for alleged abuse and neglect of her two sons Sean Preston and Jayden James, according to the Daily Mirror.
But her lawyer Laura Wasser told the LA Superior Court on Tuesday: "It does not appear the county will pursue further action at this time."
The troubled singer was facing "child endangerment" allegations about dental hygiene and poor eating and sleeping habits for her children.
But the charges did not involve any physical mistreatment of the boys.

During the early years of her career Britney made millions thanks to merchandising deals and successful hits. But she faced controversy throughout with rumours of plastic surgery and feuds with other stars. Her third album, which saw her take a sexier and more adult turn, was a relative disappointment while her critically panned but box office friendly debut movie Crossroads was a fleeting highlight. Meanwhile her long relationship with Justin Timberlake came to an end in 2002 amid claims that her reputation as a virgin was false and in fact that she had cheated on the N*Sync star?Britney responded by sharing a kiss with idol Madonna on stage at the MTV Awards ? an act which saw the pair criticized more than admired.
The kiss signaled the end of Britney?s pop-childhood and with the release of In The Zone and the hit single Toxic she began building a new fanbase. A drunken Las Vegas wedding to childhood friend Jason Alexander ended in annulment after just fifty five hours but, rather than concentrate on her career, Britney continued leaning on the lovelife self destruct button. She, despite advice to the contrary, married dancer, aspiring rapper and all round rat-faced bad boy Kevin Federline in a trailer trash wedding in 2004 and within months announced she was pregnant.
Having given birth to son, Sean Preston, Britney seems to have put her career on hold despite the success of a greatest hits album and the launch of her fragrance, Curious. Meanwhile rumours persist about the state of her marriage to Federline with the press accusing him of taking no interest in his wife and son and of cheating on the singing star.
