Tinchy Stryder – Something about your smile
Release date: Out now
Format: Single
Genre: Grime
Our Rating: 2/5
I’m not particularly familiar with Grime, if this can be considered as Grime...as some have suggested that Tinchy has toned it down slightly and this does feel quite like pop.
Something About Your Smile is a trite RnB / pop tune that has some reasonable MCing over it. Tinchy’s MC capabilities have never been in doubt. Having collaborated with The Streets on two top ten singles, his performance here is solid but not particularly noteworthy.
The female vocal of the track combines cheesy lyrics and a style which alludes to Mariah Carey - a particularly uninspiring combination, although it does showcase the singer – Cyleena’s – vocal range.
But perhaps my loathing of this RnB style vocal and tune is impairing my judgment. It is catchy and if you think about what charts well as a single I would be surprised if this does not sell reasonably.

Press release:
Hot, fresh Kickers Urban Music Best Newcomer 2007 nominee Tinchy Stryder is releasing his much anticipated debut album Star in the Hood
Hot on the tail of past collaborator and scene veteran Dizzee Rascal, Tinchy, has written an album, which has been described as the ‘soundtrack of the urban streets’.With tracks produced by frontrunner DaVinChe and vocals by female sensation Goldielocks, the album is a synergy of flavours and opens with a powerful and compelling introduction.
Mixed amongst the earthy, raw beats, Dance 4 Now, stands out for its upbeat tempo which is reminiscent of classic old school garage and will be certain to get everyone moving towards the dance floor.
The album will be a refreshing alternative soundtrack to the summer with the already critically acclaimed taster single Breakaway having underground success.
Having received ‘Best Newcomer MC’ award at the Sidewinder, NSC People’s Choice Awards 2003 and collaborated on top ten hits with ‘The Streets’ Tinchy is set to storm the charts with his debut album.
The gritty, driving sounds of tracks such as Workin for Days and Wonder complement the melodic and uplifting tones of lead single Something About Your Smile (released 6th August).
‘Something About Your Smile is a slice of upbeat urban pop with a strong commercial underbelly.’ Music Week 28th July 07
This album, from the 20 year old who’s humble beginnings started in Ruff Sqwad has brought a star to the forefront.
