Music Review: The Undertones – Dig Yourself Deep
Release Date: Out now
Genre: Pop/Punk
Format: Album
Rating: 4/5
The Undertones’ long awaited follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2003 album ’Get What You Need’ has finally arrived. Dig Yourself Deep packs a punch with fourteen mini pop-punk packages crammed into just over thirty minutes. With no over the top intros or outros each song is concise and to the point and gives us some Teenage Kicks style tunes which will please old fans. This album only pauses for breath with Fight My Corner and the beautiful Move Right In which provides a little bit of respite with a refreshing slower pace.
The Undertones have managed to bring punk bang up to date by giving tracks like Everything You Say Is Right and We All Talked About You a modern pop edge which is sure to gain them new fans from the younger generation. They set out to make this a much more guitar-based CD and have accomplished this with intertwining jangley melodies and riff-laden bridges. To show their versatility, they even venture into Indie territory with Tomorrow’s Tears but still manage to keep the punk undertones alive.
Dig Yourself Deep is mainly an upbeat, fun and lively album that is sure to make you want to don braces and Doc Martens and dance around like a complete lunatic and maybe chill and have a fag when the more mellow tracks are playing.
