Music review: Free Blood- Quick and Painful
Release date: Out now
Format: Single
Genre: Experimental Pop
Our Rating: 4/5
Musical debauchery; noisy, lots of synthesisers, definitely something to get up and move too. If you enjoy eclectic offerings from the likes of The Scissor Sisters or ZZ Top, give this a go- but warn your neighbours in advance!

Press release:
Free Blood are an exciting prospect. Born of an idle chat amongst friends one drunken evening, they began putting their hazy plans into action last year and so comes the release of their first EP.
“We really wanted to play music for people at parties that wouldn't be so much a performing "band", but manic background music for ensuing debauchery. We liked the idea of us blasting away in the corner as people frolic in an orgy of bliss. Immediately we thought of getting Madeline involved because she was always at the party facilitating mayhem in her own way. We would always find her on the dancefloor in some wild outfit she built from scratch, and would yell in her ear about this party band we wanted her to be in. This scenario of drunk discussion went on for nearly a year, before we finally got together in a concrete room at the infamous Taaffe Place.
I had bought an old 70's Electroharmonix drum box right before I left Sacramento for NYC and was writing songs with it and a bass guitar. Gorman filled in the bass parts and Maddy and I sang or screamed or breathed heavily, while the funky little drum box did its thing. The simplicity of it all (three people, one bass, one amp and a PA) was a very attractive aspect to us.” John Pugh
The results are clear – refreshing, exciting dance-pop covered in a filthy layer of scum to keep the hot, sweaty, underground sleaze factor as high as possible. The combination of soul male/female vocals, deep bass and p-funk beats produce and invigorating musical experience.
“It's like a stripped down mix of Outkast and the Shangri Las. it's a weird, oldie feel but with drum machines and soul vocals.” John Pugh
Free Blood have been heating things up in NYC for a few months on the live circuit but this is the first release ever by the trio – as picked up by Adventures Close To Home Records – only their second release since launching the label earlier this year. Good work.
As if that isn’t enough excitement – this EP comes complete with exceptional mixes from the UK’s hottest beat combo, Hot Chip (such big fans of Free Blood, they personally requested the remix parts) and the ACTH boys themselves.
‘Quick & Painful’ / ‘Never Hear Surf Music’ plus the mixes make up the first of three EP’s to be released by Free Blood on ACTH. All will be available on 12” so keep em peeled for the follow up…
