The rich colours of autumn and winter

Feature

Fashion certainly follows the seasons when it comes to colour trends. Gone are the light and airy colours of summer and in are the warm colours to visually keep off the chill. This season, colours turn to the regal and earthy colours of golds and reds with a splash of rich purples, perfect for the Christmas season.

After a pale summer of white, this season pulls out a wealth of colour to bathe in. The golds and reds are both rich and subtle, with traditional earthy tones of sun-dried rich ochre and terracotta, burnt earthen tones, honey, scorched gold and few livelier tones of mustard yellow, ruby red, regal purple and rich plum. To ground these colours, grey becomes the new black.

The greys are not as boring as you might imagine. These range from dark charcoal to silver grey, with the continuation of metallic fabrics and accessories in these tones. The glitzy Christmas party season will be glinting with silver grey metallics and gleaming with gold sequins and beads. Gold lame-style dresses and jackets have made a big comeback on the catwalks and the high street. This is not a minimalist hide-in-the-shadows season.

Summer pinks have turned an autumnal shade of warmer corals and darker watermelon tones, which look striking set against grey. For those who shy away from such rich and vibrant colour, there are more subtle ways to wear colour this season. The summer’s natural tones of creamy skin tones and cameo pinks have evolved into more earthy, soft colours of powdery shades with brownish undertones. These look fabulous layered with antique rose or coral rose pinks.

Despite this splash of colour, white has made it into this season in the form of warm winter white and iridescent pearl or oyster. This, though, is most often applied to cowl-neck jumpers and accessories, leaving the stronger colours of the season to dominate everything from coats to dresses.

Of these entire colour choices, red is the colour with the biggest clout and it comes in every hue from cranberry to ruby. The Christmas dress shuns the little black number for a racy little red. Dresses sport V-necklines and strapless bodices, all nipped in sexily to the waist. Look to Monsoon, Marks & Spencer, Phase Eight and Jasper Conran at Debenhams for knee and full length evening gowns. Accessories for Christmas evoke glamour with rich faux gemstones. Swarovski have the most divine red crystal and pink bracelet cuff to add a little sparkle to your Christmas do.
