Stables Market Closure
feature
You can forget the Electric Ballroom,
But despite being smothered with fashion-hunters on the prowl for goodies from the flashback eras of the 70’s, 80s and 90s, the alternative fashion pound of Night Fever-styled flares, 80s thrash shoes and Kitsch-inspired boutiques is sadly set to come to an end.
It’s foundations a Victorian horse hospital, Stables Market is an endless entourage of outdoor eating areas, thriving record stores, lively entertainment and adventurous traders-cum-designers. Bitterly the integral outlet for vintage and retro clothing faces its death knell…
With a new development program underway the renovation promises a shopping complex complete with restaurants, bars, shops, clubs and other venues. This once delectably shabby landmark will soon become a futuristic modern spot overshadowing the rustic charms of the Stable pleasantries. Though the resentment towards the closure has been overwhelming - could this be a makeover of a lifetime?

"I went there today (9th October) to search for a bargain vintage crombie in Rokit (the Stables branch) and the other vintage shops, where I have picked up many clothes etc for next to nothing. Imagine my complete disdain when I got shouted at for walking onto a construction site! I am gutted, not least because I had no idea the council were planning on this "refurbishment". Talk about selling out. Strangely enough, I have absolutely no desire for any more shifty, sleazy tack-sellers who have no idea what they're selling and who they're selling to. I thought that the arches were the last little bit of Camden Town that remained untouched. But it seems that the transofrmation of the market will soon be complete. As one of the guys in Cold Steel said, this is the end of Camden Market as WE know it. A sad day - I've got no reason to go there any more."

"I hate them, I hate them, I hate them. Imbecilic Counsel. So much for socialism and power to the people. They could have asked anyone, anyone at all, and been told: 'No effing way!' But no. We need a new cacky shopping mall. Cause godknows we don't have enough of those in london already. I think i might have to go throw eggs at it when it's done."

"What they're doing is disgusting, nobody is going to have any reason to go there anymore. Why would I go out of my way to go to Camden town if it no longer has the charm and truly unique essence that brings me there in the first place, why would I go to a Camden multiplex shopping center when there are loads everywhere already?"

"This apalling decision is an absolute disgrace, the council planners who have approved this should hang their heads in shame. The council has obviously gone for the quick buck, selling out one of London's most alluring and exciting shopping areas, to create yet ANOTHER boring, homogenous indent-i-kit shopping street, full of the same boring brands. The decision is obviously all about the money, but ironically, i think that in the long run the council will end up losing. millions of people flock from around the world to enjoy Camden... because it's UNIQUE. when it becomes just another shopping area, it loses that appeal - and the visitors who drive Camden Town's economy will stay away. I've lived in camden for the last two years and in that time the council has cancelled the Kenwood concerts (one of the true cultural highlights of the London summer), and now they're turning the Stables into a boring homogenous high street. Whoever has been elected to govern our borough should be aware that they have been appointed to safeguard a hugley important area in terms of our contemporary cultural heritage. Camden Town isn't just any old town, it is a UNIQUE place that is adored by many millions of people from around the world. You can only sell your soul once. Then it's gone. To those responsible for this crazy decision, you should be utterly ashamed of yourselves. But then again, words like 'soul' and 'shame' don't mean much to the money men... and they obviously don't mean much to our elected representatives in the council either."

"Sadly I don't get the chance to visit Camden all that much, I live in Nottingham. However I have always had plans to relocate to Camden, plans which would be coming to effect in the next 2 or 3 years. If this development goes ahead and takes away the reason everyone I know loves Camden in the first place I will be changing my plans. It's a shame that something with such wonder and charm is being stamped on in place of something every city has ten times over. London doesn't need another high street suburb. It saddens me that the little shops as well as the market will suffer with the build of a shiny new develpoment. England is losing so much of it's culture already, is it really necessary to take this away from us too? I really think it needs reconsidering and I hope that the petitions work - if they don't I hope people don't give up on keeping Camden the unique and fabulous place it is now."

"Cannot believe that somewhere with so much charcter is threatened with development - jeez, are there not enough corporate shopping outlets in the world already? I don't visit all that often, but a day out in Camden market is an adventure, a trip to enjoy, loads of different stuff to discover. What's the story? Health and safety worried about the cobbles? Big money thinking they have the same attraction? Tragic."

"what are you doing stables market is the heart and soul of camden. i love strolling down cobble streets and looking at all the retro out there stalls and shops. redeveloping it is the worse idea i ever heard. why take away camdens essence and replacing it with boring "modern" crap. your stealing the charisma that brings all us to camden in the first place"

"It makes me feel truely sad that I will no longer be able to stroll around Camden market. I just cannot understand why anyone would want to ruin somewhere with such atmosphere and character. I have severe objections at the thought of this going ahead. Im sure this is the case with the majority of locals and regulars. Such a shame."

"there's plenty of places in London to buy clothes from shopping complexes, but not vintage clothes. not very fair."

"I don't believe it - it's been my lifeline for alternative shopping for over a decade! Gutted - where am I going to get my PVC clothing, tight black jeans and New Rocks from now??? It's like Kensington market all over again....where will the next alternative spot be? Heike, Southampton"

"It's such a shame that the fat cats are trying to suck the character out of Camden now...if we wanted to shop at Topshop we'd go to Oxford Street!"
