Column: London Life...November
In the latest installment of her monthly column, Leigh Morrison gives us the lowdown on life in the capital, post-World Cup disaster...
I can hardly give an update of life in the big smoke over the past month without mentioning the rugby World Cup Final.
The nation seemed to be gripped by some magical patriotic glow, the extent of which I’ve never before witnessed. Even my ‘I’m not that interested in sport’ boyfriend was yelling along with all the other testosterone pumped males throughout the country.
Maybe I should explain why this level of excitement seems so alien to me: I’m Scottish. Us northerners don’t seem to get as much world class sporting action which is heralded as widely as the England fighting their corner against South Africa.
Even though I am from north of the border, I have to say that I do sympathise with all the folks who dreamed of seeing Jonny Wilkinson glide through Trafalgar Square on top of a double-decker bus. Those dreams are now in tatters – until next time that is.
So, as the chaps across the capital could talk about nothing but rugger, several of us girlies were rather more interested in the new Kate Moss for Topshop launch. The new Autumn/Winter 07 line hit stores on October 25 and was preceded by yet another display of drunken tomfoolery from said Ms Moss. The supermodel hit the town with so-called celebrities including Jamie ‘my girlfriend’s rather tall’ Cullum and Naomi ‘I’m such a nice girl…no, really’ Campbell and painted the town red until the early hours of the next morning. I’m sure Topshop boss Sir Phillip Green had something to say about the bar bill at the end of night.
I have to finish this month by mentioning a subject that has countless Londoners up in arms. Well, I say countless - mainly because there are so few to count.
The latest travesty getting people on board their high horses is the damage that little puppy dogs are subjecting trees to the East End. The bullying has apparently reached the extent that the trees actually have their own security. Oh yes, a few beeches and oaks have been donning cages around their trunks to keep off those pesky poodles in the hope that they will stop sharpening their teeth against the wood. Maybe I’m on my own here, but this seems slightly on the mad side – we’re talking pets, not wild bark eating savages!
Watch out dog owners, the East End is going to get you and your little pooch too!
Want to defend the many dogs of the East End? Or give us your London lowdown? Maybe you’d just like to say hello to Leigh…hit Post A Comment.
