Like Driving? Or Staying In?
community
Two of the Camden Contact the Elderly groups are struggling to carry on their once a month befriending of the elderly. It’s simply due to a lack of a few kind local people. They only need to spend one Sunday afternoon a month driving or two afternoons a year hosting a tea to keep the groups going.
Linda Trevett who runs one of the groups has been looking for a couple of extra car drivers for some time and is now getting desperate to find someone who likes driving and also can understand how lonely elderly people can get. The group goes out one Sunday afternoon a month, each driver taking two elderly people in their car out to a tea party at a family home.
Linda says “The group’s been going for 30 years, we’ve had some wonderful elderly guests over that time, some have been completely blind, many have had very hard lives and ended up very lonely but all of them have so enjoyed the monthly teas.” She says “All we are asking for is a kind person who likes to drive and can spare one Sunday afternoon a month.”
“The drivers stay with the elderly at the teas to join in the chat and cake. The elderly have often lead fascinating lives which makes for great conversations and they still have so much to give, yet they are often invisible to the rest of society.”
The other
Julius and Belinda Drake already host the group, they say “Our family has been hosting the group for years, we love seeing them and the elderly are so happy to get out and have some company and laughter after spending so much time alone.”
If you can help please call 0800 716 543 to offer your services, we can’t pay you to help out but you’ll be more than compensated by the warmth of the appreciation, and you’ll have made some lonely older people very happy.
