Jamelia ’doing OK’ after split - Aug 22 2007

Jamelia has insisted she’s "OK" following her split from footballer Darren Byfield.

The pop star - who is set to host the Mobo Awards in London - reportedly told The Sun: "Living your relationship in the public eye is a difficult thing to do, especially when both of you are under the spotlight.

"I still love Darren and we will remain the best of friends."

The singer has two children - Tiani, 20 months, her daughter with Darren, and six-year-old Teja, her little girl from a previous relationship.

The star went on: "I’m doing OK. I’m a practical person and I’ve got two children to look after so I’m not going to fall apart.

"I’m not scared about being a single mum again as I don’t see myself that way.

"Darren has always played an active role in the kids’ lives and I’m confident that he always will. He’s a fantastic father."

She added: "My friends and family have been amazing and are supporting me through this every step."

Jamelia splits from footballer Darren - Aug 16 2007
Jamelia has apparently split from her footballer boyfriend Darren Byfield.

The pop star has left the couple’s home in Kent and has moved back to stay with her mum in Birmingham, reports the Daily Mirror.

A source told the paper: "It is over and they are devastated. They tried to make it work but the romance fizzled out."

A spokesman for the star is quoted as saying: "Jamelia and Darren have sadly parted but it is an amicable split."

Four-time MOBO winner Jamelia, 26, who shot to fame with the massive hit single Superstar back in 2003, had been dating Millwall player Darren, 30, for some time.

The couple have a 20-month-old daughter together, Tiani. The pop songstress also has a six-year-old daughter, Teja, from a previous relationship.

Jamelia’s hits include Thank You, Money, Something About You and See It In A Boy’s Eyes.

Different ranges have been designed for women with Afro-Caribbean hair, natural-looking styles, and short hair.

The Thank You singer said: "I think it’s about time that there was a haircare range specifically designed for ethnic hair available on every high street."

Marks and Spencer model Erin said: "Working in the fashion industry has enabled me to be a part of the creative process, to push boundaries, experiment with extreme styles, and explore the constantly evolving trends. My hair really is a huge part of who I am."

Helena said: "After working in the modelling industry for many years, I know exactly what my hair needs, so it’s great to have the chance to make my ideal products from scratch for others to benefit from, too."

Biography

Jamelia Niela Davis was born to a Jamaican mother and Zimbabwean father and raised in Birmingham’s Winson Green.

Signed to Parlaphone aged just fifteen, Jamelia impressed record execs with a tape of self penned songs sung a-capella.  Her first single, So High, was released in 1999 but it failed to chart while follow up, I Do, entered the charts but at a low position.  Still just eighteen Jamelia released an album, Drama, which peaked at 39 in the charts and produced the single Money which went top five and earned the singer five MOBO nominations.

Taking time out to look after her baby daughter Teja, born in 2001, Jamelia returned to music in 2003, releasing Thank You, which stuck at number 65 in the album charts.  However, despite this disappointment the accompanying single, Superstar, gave her a taste fo true pop stardom.  Jamelia’s singles continued to chart well and before long she was also signed up to model for Pretty Polly and Reebok.

Three MOBO awards and three Brit nominations later Jamelia gave birth to a second daughter, Tiani, fathered by footballer Darren Byfield.

Her third album, Walk With Me, was released in 2006 and featured some quality collaborations and produced some reasonably successful singles, among them Something About You and Beware of the Dog.

Jamelia is a high profile campaigner for animal rights charity PETA and HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns with proceeds of her own fragrance donated to the cause.
