The singer-songwriter, who first shot to fame as a Pop Idol winner, gave an assured performance in Noel Coward’s The Vortex, at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester.

Hunky Will made his acting debut in the musical comedy Mrs Henderson Presents, starring alongside Dame Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins - who suggested he try his hand acting in theatre.

Last night the 27-year-old took the play’s lead role, Nicky Lancaster, a messed-up, drug-addled and self absorbed spoilt brat in England’s Roaring 20s.

Former public schoolboy Will did not look out of place, in a play about repressed sexuality and the decadence and degeneracy of high society in the 1920s.

It is a major departure for the singer, who has won two Brit Awards and had four No 1 singles.

Is Will Young taking a trip to Oz?  It’s rumoured the Pop Idol winner is being lined up to star in new West End show Wicked, described as "the untold story of the Witches of Oz".

Will has apparently auditioned to play the male lead, a character called Fiyero, after the current actor’s contract ends in six months time.  And it seems show bosses are taking no chances when it comes to securing Will for the part.

The Sun reports the Mrs Henderson Presents star got the full VIP treatment when he popped in to watch the show.  "Will was treated like a king. Lucy Liu, who was in Charlie’s Angels, had been in to watch the show a couple of nights before and didn’t receive the same pampering," a source told the paper.  Will had the best seats and was put in the VIP room, something which isn’t the norm for celebrities.

"They’re really trying to woo him and he seems keen to get started with rehearsals."
