The father-of-two, whose new single Share My World is out today, told the Daily Express: "The kids being there was the greatest joy for me.
"They had seen me perform in stage musicals and on TV, but it was great to show them that side of their dad. They’ve even started singing the songs around the house!"
Jason, who’s set to star at the Concert For Diana on July 1, added that the secret behind his comeback is not taking himself too seriously.
"It’s important to understand what people like about you as an act. I’m an entertainer, so I told lots of stories about mullet hairdos, Neighbours and I’m A Celebrity on the tour," he said.
"It worked out really well and I feel really proud now."
Jason has two children, Jemma, six, and Zac, five, with his partner Angela Malloch.
Jason back with new TV drama - April 23 2007
Jason Donovan is apparently making a welcome return to the small screen in new drama Wallpaper.
The actor is thought to be starring in the show when it is broadcast later this year.
The actor shot to fame as spiky-haired teen Scott Robinson in Aussie soap Neighbours in the 80s and recently spoke out about the popular show boosted his career.
"Everyone knocks my old show, but look how well we have all done after it. So, come on and show us some respect," he said.
Jason quit Neighbours in 1989 and launched a successful solo singing career, teaming up with producers Stock, Aitken and Waterman.
He’s also been seen on the big screen in movies such as Blood Oath and has enjoyed a stage career. He played Frank N Furter in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, took the lead role in Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and headlined a revival of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 2004.
He has also taken part in reality TV series I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!
Jason slams kiss and tell book reports - Mar 16 2007
Jason Donovan has slammed reports he is planning to release a tell-all book detailing his romance with Kylie Minogue.
A Sunday newspaper claimed Jason, who co-starred with Kylie when they were teenagers in Aussie soap Neighbours, had received a £1 million advance to reveal the intimate details of their relationship.
The report quoted an unnamed publishing executive saying: "The chapters about Kylie are absolutely gripping and have every sexy detail about Kylie."
But Jason said: "It made me smile on Sunday. What an amazing story - £1 million for an autobiography that hasn’t even been written.
"Let’s get this into perspective - firstly £1 million is a gross misrepresentation of the figures.
"They said it was a kiss and tell story but I haven’t written the book.
"Yes, I am doing an autobiography and yes, Kylie will be part of that, but I would argue I’m not a kiss and tell person at all. It will be a sophisticated book about my life."
In the meantime, Jason will be busy getting ready for his new comeback tour and acting as a consultant on new BBC show Any Dream Will do.
Macca snubs ’Celebrity’ Jason? - Dec 20 2006
Jason Donovan may insist "I’m A Celebrity..." but it seems Sir Paul McCartney may not agree.
The former Beatle had no idea who the reality TV star was when they met at a gig, according to The Sun.
Macca, 64, reportedly refused to have his photo taken with the Australian star and asked an aide, "Who was that guy again?" when Jason shook his hand.

A string of hits including Too Many Broken Hearts and Especially For You made him the biggest male popstar of the time. However, following a turn on the West End stage in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat his career faltered, affected by a cocaine addiction.
He made a comeback in 1999/2000 as Frank N Furter in the West End production of The Rocky Horror Show and more recently has appeared in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Sweeney Todd. He lives in the UK with his girlfriend and their two children.
