It seems the star was posing for photographs at the Dutch premiere of his film Music And Lyrics when a fan leapt out of the crowd and handcuffed herself to him.
A slightly bemused Hugh then had to walk down the red carpet signing autographs with the woman chained to his left wrist.
According to the Daily Express, the star spent a full ten minutes attached to her as firefighters struggled to release him.
Even when the chain was eventually broken, Hugh was still stuck with the handcuff around his wrist and was forced to spend the rest of the evening with the metal bracelet tucked up his sleeve.
The Express reports that the woman was detained by Dutch police.
An onlooker told the paper: "It was incredible. She came from nowhere and Grant couldn’t believe it was happening.
"But he was the ultimate professional. He just stood in silence and waited for the firefighters to free him. He did look relieved when he disappeared into the theatre - she could have been a maniac."
Hugh will see Liz wedding - Feb 20 2007
A newly single Hugh Grant now plans to watch Liz Hurley tie the knot after finishing with Jemima Khan.
Hugh had apparently been banned from attending the marriage by Jemima who made no secret of her loathing for Hugh’s ex.
The actor has now booked a hotel room for the March 3 wedding in Gloucestershire, according to The Sun, where he will join Elton John and other celeb guests to watch 41-year-old Liz marry businessman Arun Nayar, 42, at Sudeley Castle.
The guests will then fly to Mumbai in India for another ceremony on March 9.
Hugh and Liz have remained friends since their relationship broke up in 2000.
But relations where strained after Jemima supposedly said that Liz had had no class and hit the roof when she found her sucking Hugh’s finger at an Elton John parties.
The Music and Lyrics star announced the end of his three year relationship relationship with Jemima on Friday.
Hugh and Jemima announce separation - Feb 17 2007
Hugh Grant and Jemima Khan have separated.
Robert Garlock told US website People.com: "Hugh and Jemima have decided to split amicably."
Romantic comedy star Grant, 46, who is best known for his role in Four Weddings and a Funeral, had been dating Khan for about three years but had recently dodged questions about whether marriage was on the cards.
Khan, socialite daughter of the late millionaire James Goldsmith, began her relationship with Grant after the breakdown of her marriage to Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, with whom she has two sons.
The split comes days after the couple attended the London and Los Angeles premieres of his new film, Music and Lyrics.
There have been suggestions that their relationship was in trouble after they were reportedly seen arguing in public.
The pair were seen rowing at Khan’s 33rd birthday party held at The George Restaurant in Mayfair, London.
Khan was reportedly overheard joking about Grant’s commitment phobia to which he replied she was behaving like a dictator.
Grant, who has never been married, was famously arrested with a prostitute in Hollywood in 1995, while in a long-term relationship with actress and model Elizabeth Hurley.

In 1995, Hugh became the scandal of the year by hiring a prostitute, Divine Brown, to perform certain acts in the privacy of his automobile. His girlfriend, Liz Hurley was not amused and although she stuck by him through the scandal they finally called it quits in 2000 after 13 years together. The Divine Brown incident could well have been the making of Hugh Grant though, after this mishap he was cast in many more films and became a British icon here and in the States.
Although many of his films at this time were dubious to say the least, their ratings were bouyed by his popularity and in 1999 he made a real comeback. Notting Hill was a return to form for Grant, made by the same team that first shot to fame with Four Weddings...it confirmed his status and saw his star on the rise again. Following up his success with About A boy and Bridget Jone’s Diary which saw him departing from his usual role as bumbling English fool and made him a whole new type of heartthrob.
He has also starred in Love Actually as the Prime Minister, which saw much speculation as to whether Brits would actually prefer Grant as the leader of their country. Hugh remains a bachelor, despite rumours of a fling with co-star Sandra Bullock, and remains very close friends with Liz Hurley with whom he owns Simian Productions.
