Boy George’s knockout - 24/06/02
Hampstead man about town Boy George has reportedly shown himself to be handy with his mitts. He allegedly knocked a man out cold in a fist fight at Soho gay club Sweet Suite on Wardour Street. Boy George got into an argument with the duty manager at the Club and is said to have knocked him out cold.
George is better known for the quality of his singing and DJ-ing but now he’s proved he’s no slouch as street fighter. George apparently got into what one onlooker described as a hissy fit after staff at the club failed to recognise him when he tried to get into the club’s VIP area.
Boy George is refusing to make any comment about the incident which follows close on the heels of another fracas when he is alleged to have hit a man in Leicester Square just two days earlier.
Boy George’s life in West End Show - 08/02/02
Hampstead’s Boy George is the subject of a new West End musical, Taboo. The new musical tells Boy George’s story of success and excess as well as evoking the 1980s in terms of fashion and art, power and politics, club-culture and sexuality.
This semi-autobiographical account runs in London’s intimate new West End theatre, The Venue in Leicester Square. It’s bound to appeal to Boy George fans and fading New Romantics. Pop icon-turned-DJ Boy George provides the music and lyrics, including 1980s classics Do You Really Want to Hurt Me and Karma Chameleon to name but two, as well as a sprinkling of new tunes for the show.
Direction is by award-winning Christopher Renshaw of ’The King and I’ fame. Euan Morton takes the leading role and, under layers of make-up and decked out in full Boy George regalia, he’s a convincing copy of the original style queen.
Other key characters include Steve Strange from Visage, the beautiful Marilyn and club entrepeneur Philip Sallon. The story and dialogue are by Mark Davies-Markham, one of the writers on the hit BBC show This Life.
Taboo runs until 14/09/02
