As the Go Faster Stripes and syncopated rhythms lure you into this debut album, you realise quickly that you’re in for quite a ride. With an orchestration that includes tender glockenspiels, crazy kazoo-playing, a serious helping of hand-clapping and tambourines in pillowcases, this album could easily be seen as gimmicky. But no. Kat Flint is a superb songwriter and these quirks make a delicious combination of lyrical and whimsical. Her voice switches effortlessly from ethereal to sultry during tales of junkyard prostitutes, the end of the world and how your lover is comprised of 72.8% water.
There are touches of many good things here: Cocteau Twins (Shotgun Wedding) and Belle & Sebastian (Saddest Blue Dress) but Kat Flint is very much herself.
With harmonies to make you sigh, infuriating yet beguiling rhythms and some cracking good tunes, Dirty Birds marks the beginning of something fresh and captivating in contemporary folk.
