Why are some restaurants here two or three times and some very good ones not here at all? I am copying this from the other entry for the same restaurant:
Okay, I've spent some time in India, have real Indian friends, and moved to Highgate from an area of London that was almost 50% Bangladeshi, so I may have higher expectations than the typical posh types in Highgate, but...
Highgate is just AWFUL for "Indian" (or rather, usually: Bangladeshi) food. The nearest place to get anything like decent "Indian" food is Majjo in East Finchley (actually Pakistani, I believe). Forget Highgate. As a result I hadly ever eat "Indian" food any more.
I live right opposite Kiplings and it's a measure of just how appallingly awful it is that, despite having eaten a lot of Indian/Bangladeshi/Pakistani food in the past, I have only been there to eat or get a takeaway about once a year since moving in.
In those six years they have spent a great deal on the decor but the food has got worse.
Last time I ordered a takeaway the saffron rice (which used to be one of the bright spots on an otherwise bland, overpriced and pretentious menu) turned out to be vaguely curry flavoured Chinese style egg fried rice! I kid you not. Simply AWFUL. I didn't eat it - despite having being sufficiently hungry to give Kiplings another go!
Bland, inauthentic, overpriced and sometimes inedible. AVOID.
Cafe run as work experience for people with learning difficulties and the like, so obviously it's not going to be like most cafes you ever go in.
It can all be a bit barmy and hit and miss, although the person in charge prevents any serious mishaps. Also it's got pretty short opening hours.
Still, if you've got a sense of humour/patience, you're not in a mad rush, and fancy a very reasonably priced simple meal when it's actually open, I'd recommend it.
