Interview with
Beth Teshome of Beth Teshome Designs
by Mandy
Beth Teshome has her shop located in the Middle
Yard of Camden Lock Market, and she draws on her influences
of travel to create stunning clothes for women of all shapes
and sizes. We had a chat before her fashion show (see end
of page) to ask how it all began...
How did you start in the fashion business?
After graduating from London Collage of Fashion I looked into
setting up my own label and business. I was always into fashion
at a young age; at the age of fifteen I got myself a job at
a boutiques store on Bond Street, which allowed me to be around
fashionable people and also boutique stores that sold designer
Clothing from all the top name brands.
What made you choose Camden as your design
outlet?
As you probably know Camden is one of London's most cosmopolitan
towns, I choose Camden because of the eclectic mix of people.
It was probably the best place to establish the Beth Teshome
Designs label, and to see if my ideas and designs would work.
How would you describe your designs?
Probably simple, luxuries, and sophisticated.
What influences you in your work?
I travel a lot, so I use my experience, of the people and
their cultures to influence me. It could be something as simple
as colours, and textures that give me ideas.
What do you enjoy the most about creating
fashion?
Every thing about fashion is exciting it allows you to be
creative and outrages with your ideas. I get such an adrenaline
when a new design comes to me, especially when the idea has
been created and someone is wearing it.
What advice would you give any new designers
out there?
Stay dedicated to your work and your ideas, and try to be
different!
What do you enjoy doing when you're not
working?
I like to travel when I am not working on a collection. I
also enjoy going to the sauna and gym or going to restaurants
with friends and colleagues when I am not busy working.
Beth Teshome was recently one of the stars
of the Camden Fashion Show 'Significant Other'. This was a
catwalk event held on a cool evening in September...
