Cafés and Coffee Shops
"For most members of the employed public "lunch" is a term
equated with a pre-packed sandwich, a bag of crisps and a
can of soda. In this grim climate, Kitchen Café shines like
a burst of California sunshine. In contrast to the high street
chains, Kitchen Café is warm, personal and unique, and there's
hardly a scrap of plastic in sight. Located beneath the Diorama
Arts Gallery, the café remains bright and friendly even on
the greyest of days.
" Kitchen Café specialises in filling food with an emphasis
on vegetables, so you'll have no problem getting your five-a-day
within these walls. And once you've experienced the café's
version of freshness, you may have to laugh at chain shops'
claims that their plastic-encased lunches are "fresh". Customers
struggle to decide between the quiche of the day (£3.50),
soup of the day (£2.50) and the hot dishes, such as fish pie
or stew over couscous (£5.00).
" Everything is served from lovely old crockery, and most
dishes come with a fat slice of unbelievably fresh bread and
a choice of salads. Desserts also change daily, and never
disappoint. As you dine off mismatched antique plates around
large communal tables, you'll marvel that this secret café
is only a stone's throw from Great Portland Street station.
Lunch at Kitchen Café leaves you feeling you've escaped from
London to a place where the midday meal is a relaxing, sustaining
break to be enjoyed with good friends." Shannon Denny 17/10
"What a relief to find an oasis like this amidst
the arid wastes of the Finchley Road. Whether or not you like
the decidely avant garde art of the gallery you are guaranteed
to warm to the friendly service offered at the cafe. The food
is delicious and tastes authentically home-made - no pre-packaged
rubbish here - and is cheaper than the average gallery cafe.
But it's the staff that really make the difference here, and
you can tell that they're already racking up regulars. Highly
recommended." Miki Lentin 18/05
