Belsize Park residents Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet are expecting
their first child together.
The couple are said to be "utterly delighted" the baby is
due early in the New Year.
The Titanic star already has a two-year-old daughter Mia from
her first marriage to Jim Threapleton.
Director Sam Mendes and Kate married in May at a ceremony
in the West Indies.
A spokeswoman for the couple said: "She was expecting when
they got married but they didn't know at the time. The pregnancy
was in its very early stages."
Sam and Kate are currently enjoying a holiday in Tuscany.

Newlyweds Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes have finally been given
the go ahead to start work on their Cotswold country manor.
The pair bought the house last year but Cotswold District
Council initially turned down their planned renovations preventing
them from moving in.
A spokesperson for the council said that amended plans had
now been passed but there was "certain conditions" attached
to the approval.

The mansion is plagued with damp and local authorities are
concerned that renovation of the listed building may breach
rules.
Titanic star Kate had hoped to be ensconced in the Cotswolds,
with boyfriend Sam by the end of the year.
But the council insists the famous duo's plans could mean
losing "some historical fabric" of the building.
More accolades for Mendes - 26/11/02
Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes' final series of plays
at London's Donmar Warehouse has earned him accolades at the
Evening Standard Theatre Awards.
Mendes was named best director for his productions of Twelfth
Night and Uncle Vanya, which marked his farewell as artistic
director after a decade.
Mendes is credited with attracting a host of Hollywood stars
to the West End, including Kevin Spacey and Nicole Kidman.
Kate Winslet's partner Mendes, won an Evening Standard best
director award in 1992 for The Rise and Fall of Little Voice,
which went on to become a successful film.
The 37-year-old is bowing out of the Donmar after directing
70 plays at the 250-seat theatre, but he will continue his
association with the theatre under the title founding director.
Sam and Kate step out - 19/09/02
Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet have appeared together in
public for the first time in the UK. The pair who have been
seen together in New York, LA and Paris made attended the
London premiere of Mendes' second film, The Road to Perdition.
Looking stunning in a body-skimming black Dolce & Gabbana
dress and stilettos, Winslet laughed-off speculation that
she was heading to the altar. "Get out of here! We're just
happy as we are at the moment," she said.

It seems that Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes's relationship
is going from strength to strength, the loved up couple have
just splashed out £3.3 million for an 8-bedroom country house
in the Cotswolds.
The rambling house is set in 20-acres of land. The couple
apparently outbid Liz Hurley for the house. The property requires
a further £1.5 million to return it to its former glory.
Sam Mendes Samuel Alexander Mendes was born 1 August, 1965
in Redding, He is the artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse.
Despite scraping into Magdalen College School in Oxford, he
graduated from Peterhouse College, Cambridge, with a first
in English.
He was directing for the RSC in his 20s, and made the Donmar
London's hippest (it was he who unveiled Nicole Kidman in
The Blue Room). His cinematic debut, American Beauty, won
him the Oscars for best picture and best direction.
Has stepped out with a string of beautiful women including
Rachel Weisz and Calista Flockhart, he is now married to Kate
Winslet.
