Top Five Pubs in Camden
by Carlo Piovano
Internationally famous for its markets, the
crazy storefronts, and the teams of punks loitering around
the canal trying to scare tourists into taking pictures of
them, Camden isn't generally known for its pubs. But if you're
tired of head-banging at yet another indie metal concert and
just want a quiet corner to knock a pint down with friends,
here are the best spots to look for.
Hogshead Pub
128 Albert St./Parkway NW1
tel: 0207 284 1675
As chains go the Hogshead is perhaps one of the least boring,
even though they just got rid of all those tasty Belgian brews.
It provides a middle ground between the scuzzy Camden alterntive
dives and the suits-only wine bars. It's full of promotions
every night on both food and drink. There is an ongoing table
football competition on Tuesdays for those locals needing
something to do.
Man in the Moon
40-42 Chalk Farm Rd. NW1
tel: 0207 482 2054
A quiet and cheap haunt for those who want to get away from
the media types rampant in the nearby bars. Lots of space
will almost guarantee a table, and if not, the stairs are
clean. Situated right across from the Camden Locks, it is
a comfortable spot to sit down after your day-long hunt through
the markets for cheap deals.
Oxford Arms
265 Camden High St. NW1
tel: 0207 267 4945
The owner, Pat, is one of the main attractions in this otherwise
bland pub that has been refurbished so as to loose most personality.
Pat will come in and join the famous Monday quiz night and
offer free sausage and chips. The mood gets friendly and intimate
in no time, especially after the first few visits when you
get to know the many regular clients.
Spread Eagle
141 Albert St. NW1
tel: 0207 267 1410
The Spread Eagle offers all those features you'd expect when
walking into a good pub: nice food at normal prices and tasty
beer that's more than just the latest fashionable import.
You can find the full range of Youngs bottled, the Double
Chocolate Stout, and quality cask beer. But move on before
you need to go to the bathroom: the gents is tiny and not
a pleasant visit.
World's End
21-23 Stroud Green Rd. N4
tel: 0207 281 8679
It's the largest bar in the neighbourhood and it's there to
stay. With several large rooms, two counters, and an indoor
balcony with a skylight, the interior is meant to feel like
a street side. Unlike so many tiny crowded pubs, it is refreshingly
un-claustrophobic. With a program of commercial, sing-along
music and a service of moderately cheap drinks, the World's
End doesn't take too many chances and keeps its image as a
staple venue.
